Primary Function: Harnessing visible light-emitting anti-wrinkle benefits, the UV-absorbing fluorophores of our Tonka Bean extract make it a powerful active ingredient for diminishing the signs of aging and giving luminescence to the skin.

Secondary Function: Besides its UV-absorbing properties, our Tonka bean extract is also a powerful antioxidant for a double-dose of anti-aging benefits.

History of Use: A unique ingredient that is fairly new to the skincare world, Tonka beans have been used in the perfumery industry since the 1700s. Tonka beans are the fruits of the Dipteryx odorata tree which originates in South America, most commonly in Brazil and Columbia. In the ancient south American folklore, Tonka beans are considered lucky charms that can grant wishes if you wish upon them.

Scientific Benefits: 

  • Chromatherapeutic Properties: We all know that exposure to UV rays from the sun accelerates the signs of aging; however, studies have shown that light emitted from certain wavelengths of the visible light spectrum, can provide numerous benefits to the skin. This has led to the development of the chromatherapy field, which is the use of visible light colors to treat various ailments. Our Tonka Bean extract is rich in polyphenols that give it the ability to absorb UV rays and instead emit lights in the visible spectrum, increasing the luminescence of the skin and making it appear more revitalized. Additionally, the blue light has been shown to improve inflammatory conditions by inhibiting the functioning of pro-inflammatory molecules. Chronic micro-inflammation induced by UV ray exposure and pollutants is one of the major causes of accelerated signs of aging; therefore, the blue light’s anti-inflammatory properties lead to potent anti-aging benefits.
  • Anti-Oxidant Properties: Accumulated oxidative damage is one of the principal causes of compromised health and aging skin. Because of this, anti-oxidant ingredients that can fight and prevent additional oxidative damage are highly beneficial for preventing early signs of aging. Research has shown that the polyphenols of our Tonka Bean extract possess strong anti-oxidant capabilities, giving the ingredient an additional anti-aging boost.
  • Collagen Simulation Properties: Collagen is one of the main proteins that makes up the molecular structure of our skin and gives it the resilience it needs to function well. As we age, our collagen reservoir begins to deplete leading to sagging skin and loss of firmness. Our Tonka Bean extract, though, showed in research that it could improve the density of collagen in the skin by 11.3% after only 4 weeks of use. This increase in collagen levels maintains the structural integrity of our skin and prevents the loss of firmness generally associated with aging.
